The one time England international made the statement after playing his first game for Preston with a substitute appearance against Barnsley at the weekend. Ricketts` career had been on a downward spiral ever since his one appearance for England against Holland in 2002. In the past two and a half years, the big striker has represented seven clubs, including Southend who released him earlier this season. Since then, he has been to America to regain fitness and lose weight.

“It feels good to be back, definitely. I’ve been away to get myself fit and see where I wanted to be, to see if I wanted to come back or not. I’ve been trying to get the weight off and get toned up. I’m feeling really good now.” Said Ricketts “Having three months out I took time to completely forget about football. Now I have fallen back in love with it again,”

Preston gave him the chance to kick start his career last week and although some fans weren`t optimistic about his signing, Ricketts put in a lively display against Barnsley which shows he means business but he will have to fight for his place with six strikers all fighting for the same position.
