The Championship season continued with the latest round of games played over the weekend.
Brighton would have confirmed the title with a point but defeat kept Newcastle’s hopes alive, who won on Monday.
As for relegation second-bottom Wigan are clinging on – Blackburn are two off Birmingham, 21st, and three Nottingham Forest, 20th.

Norwich, thanks to two freak own goals from Brighton keeper David Stockdale, denied Albion the win they needed to be confirmed champions. A 2-0 loss at Carrow Road on Friday means the Seagulls will have to wait until Monday, at least.
Brentford moved up to ninth with a 3-1 win over West London rivals QPR. This sixth straight loss for the R’s means they are still a victory away from Championship safety.
After twice coming from behind Bristol City recorded a 3-2 win over Barnsley that moved the Robins to the brink of Championship survival – a point from the final two fixtures will confirm this.
Burton also stand on the brink of another season in the Championship after a 2-1 win over play-off chasing Leeds – the Whites’ second defeat in a row keeps them three points off Fulham, sixth, with two to play.
Huddersfield got off to a great start against play-off rivals Fulham but the Whites hit back to leave the John Smith’s Stadium with a 4-1 win that kept them in sixth, three points ahead of Leeds.
Nottingham Forest, fending off a fight back after being three nil up, recording a 3-2 win over promotion chasing Reading that moved Forest three point clear of the bottom-three. The Royals’, third, slim hopes of catching Newcastle, second, are effectively over.
After 17 games without a win Rotherham’s 1-0 victory, only a fifth of the campaign, over Ipswich gave the Millers’ fans something to cheer as the Tractor Boys’ winning run ended.
Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Derby, as they came from a goal down – a fifth in a row – virtually confirmed the Owls’ play-off place. A point in the final two should be enough for a top-six finish.
Wigan stand on the brink of an instant return to League 1 as a 0-0 draw with Cardiff means two wins to final games probably wouldn’t be enough to keep the second-bottom Latics in the Championship.
The points were shared between Wolves and Blackburn in a 0-0 draw at Molineux. Rovers are now three unbeaten but remain in the bottom-three, two points from safety with two to play.
Aston Villa claimed the bragging rights in the Second City derby after a 1-0 win over rivals Birmingham. Harry Redknapp’s first game in charge of the Blues ended in defeat with his side just two points above the bottom-three.
Premier League football will again be witnessed at St James’ Park next season as Newcastle bounced back to the topflight at the first attempt – Monday’s 4-1 win over Preston, struggling for form at the end of the campaign, secured a runners up spot at the very least for the Magpies.
