Preston North End picked up another three points to add to their total as they look to gain promotion to the Championship.

Simon Grayson took his side to the ABAX Stadium knowing that a win would be needed to keep up pace with the top two in the table, but instead, other results went their way and Preston ended up gaining.

But it could have been Peterborough who took the lead early on when Erhun Oztumer fired in a free kick that brought a good save out of Thorsten Stuckmann.

Preston’s first decent chance of the game fell to Paul Gallagher who blasted in a shot that struck the underside of the bar and the Posh defence cleared.

It was Gallagher again who had another chance when he fired in from the edge of the box on 20 minutes but his effort went over the top of the bar.

Then on the half hour mark, Peterborough came close to scoring themselves though Oztumer, but his shot from 25 yards out went just wide of the upright.

At the other end an effort by Laird from the left almost caught out the Peterborough keeper, but he managed to push the ball out for a corner.

From that corner, Huntington got in a header but his effort went over the top.

The game moved into stoppage time and Preston got themselves in front when the ball came to Beckford just inside the area and he weaved his way through the defence and lifted the ball over the keeper’s body and into the bottom corner.

Mclean had an effort saved by Stuckmann on 51 minutes when he was set up by Wiseman heading back to the keeper.

Then the home supporters were calling for a card to be shown to Beckford after he put in a late challenge on Bostwick, but the referee, who had earlier shown the striker a yellow, thought that a free kick was enough.

On 74 minutes, Mackail-Smith passed the ball to McLean who should really have scored but his effort went wide.

Alnwick then denied Beckford his second goal of the afternoon when he saved with his legs.
