Preston’s Championship season continued with a two-one win against Rotherham at Deepdale on Saturday with a late own goal literally handing PNE the points to kick off the New Year with a win.

Rotherham went into half time one-up when Tony Andreu headed home a Danny Ward cross but Preston were level past the hour when Cardiff loanee Eoin Doyle levelled it up from six-yards out.

Just when the points looked like they would be shared a Marnick Vermijl throw in was headed past his own ‘keeper by Jonson Clarke-Harris to win it.

Before the equaliser Joe Garner had gone close to doing so and having done this were denied the lead when Rotherham ‘keeper Lee Camp saved kept out a Doyle header with Millers defender Joe Mattock denying Garner as he followed up.

These were the other results.

Friday 1st January 2016

QPR 1-2 Hull

Saturday 2nd January 2016

Cardiff 1-0 Blackburn
Charlton 1-1 Nottm Forest
Fulham 0-1 Sheff Wed
Leeds 1-1 MK Dons
Middlesbrough 2-0 Derby
Preston 2-1 Rotherham
Reading 0-1 Bristol City

Not the start to the year Brighton wanted, with the way the last ended carrying on into the New Year with a one-nil defeat to Wolves at the Amex Stadium meaning the promotion bid took another setback.

Brentford also suffered a blow to their play-off hopes too with a late defeat at St Andrew’s meaning Birmingham won two-one to keep their play-off bid going whereas the battle of the top two ended with Middlesbrough remaining firm favourites for the title with a two-one win over Derby at the Riverside Stadium.

The relegation battling sides, Bolton and Rotherham were beaten by Huddersfield and Preston (as we know), respectively, to leave them starting 2016 very much in trouble with Charlton collecting what could prove to be a crucial point from a one-one draw at the Valley with Nottingham Forest.
